See you soon Stockholm

We are delighted to announce that we will be heading on a research trip to Stockholm in 2018, thanks to funding from Leeds 2023 Explore Fund. We are excited to meet up with Nill Editions and Art and Theory amongst others, and research the models, modes and networks of publishing practice in Scandinavia.

Leeds is bidding for the title of European Capital of Culture 2023. Explore is a capacity building fund, supporting artists and organisations from across the city to strike up new partnerships and collaborations with their counterparts from across Europe and the world.

COPY Receives Arts Council England Grant

COPY is delighted to announce that we have been awarded an Arts Council England Grant for the Arts, for our Organisational Development plans for 2016-2018.

The grant will enable us to begin a two year period of Organisational Development for COPY. This will include working with a consultant and a number of mentors to review our work to date and create a clear artistic and financial strategy for the next five years. The project will be punctuated by participation in national and international events, and will include the delivery of a pilot COPY international project, raising our profile and creating opportunities for artists nationally and internationally.

We are incredibly excited to start work on our organisational development, and wish to thank Arts Council England for their continuing support of COPY. Please sign up to our newsletter if you would like to hear more about this, as well as our upcoming events and projects.

What is an Art Book? Volume 2 featuring COPY now available

We are pleased to be able to announce the availability of What is an Art Book? Volume 2, to which we contributed. To view a copy of the finished publication, visit The Modern Language Experiment website.

For the second volume of What is an Art Book, The Modern Language Experiment once again posed the simple but important question What is an art book?  as part of the Artists Book Weekend, organised by The Mews Propject Space. An Art Book today can be seen to occupy various different positions including that of a piece of theory, a catalogue, a printed exhibition, a piece of art in itself, a supplement to a pre-existing piece. It can be a proposal for the future or an examination of the present or what has passed.

“What is an Art Book?” is an investigation of what an Art Book is in terms of material and conceptual concerns. It is a collaborative project produced during the Artist Books Weekend at the Mews Project Space, with artists, writers, curators, designers and other practitioners invited to respond to the title of the project by contributing their interpretation of what an Art book means to them and their practice. Our COPY contribution can be found on page 70.

Forthcoming publication exploring process, material and manufacture.

The forthcoming COPY publication brings together a collection of works for the page that form a relationship with material, process and manufacture, and will be produced through a period of research at both The Tetley, Leeds (UK) and Torna, Istanbul (TR). Both spaces are located in sites of significance within different industries – The Tetley as a former brewery HQ and Torna, meaning Lathe, as part of a visual engineering workshop.

Working with The Tetley from 21 June – 27 July 2014 as part of A New Reality, Part 3, COPY will present a number of events and an evolving selection of research materials that contribute to the development of the publication. Their project will explore documents, works and ideas surrounding the qualities of materials and their manipulation, labour, repetition, making, form, physicality and actions and patterns associated with technologies, and will draw together industrial processes, artistic practices and forms of publishing.

A New Reality, Part 3 launches 20 June 2014, 6-8pm. Find the project blog here. Details of events can be found on the project page.
